Attic Insulation Stopped Working
What’s Happening
When attic insulation stops working, it almost always means the material has settled, degraded, gotten wet, or was never adequate for your home’s actual heat load to begin with. From the attic hatch, look for discoloration – dark staining, orange-brown water marks on batts, or insulation that looks matted and compressed in patches rather than uniformly thin. A musty smell when you open the hatch is another strong indicator. Moisture damage doesn’t self-correct; wet material needs to come out before anything goes back in.
3. Air Gaps and Bypasses Are Undermining Everything
Insulation slows conductive heat transfer, but it does almost nothing against air moving freely through gaps around light fixtures, plumbing chases, top plates, and attic hatch perimeters. If your rooms feel drafty near the ceiling or you notice dust streaks on the insulation surface near penetrations, air infiltration is working against every dollar you’ve spent on insulation. This is a building-science issue, not just an insulation-depth issue, and it explains why some homes never feel comfortable even with apparently adequate insulation.
4. The Original Installation Was Undersized for Your Climate Zone
Homes built before the mid-1990s were often insulated to standards that energy codes have since left behind. If your house has never had additional insulation added and the HVAC runs constantly without getting rooms to temperature, the problem may simply be that you never had enough insulation to begin with – not that something failed. Pull back a small section and measure the depth. If it’s under six inches of fiberglass or cellulose, you’re almost certainly underinsulated by current standards.

- Look into the attic hatch safely from floor level. You don’t need to climb in. Shine a flashlight across the surface and note the depth, color, and whether the joists are visible. Take a photo – it helps your technician assess faster.
