Knauf Radiant Barrier Installation Nationwide

Knauf Radiant Barrier Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Knauf radiant barrier installation in Los Angeles typically runs $1.50 to $3.25 per square foot installed, and Warmline stocks Knauf-compatible perforated foil on our trucks, so most attic jobs go from diagnosis to done in a single visit. We’re an independent Los Angeles installer, not a Knauf affiliate, but we’ve worked with their radiant barrier product line since 2011.

Most homeowners call us after noticing their upstairs rooms won’t hold a cool temperature no matter how hard the AC runs, or after spotting torn foil and dead air pockets when they climb up to grab holiday decorations. The barrier that should be reflecting radiant heat away from your living space has quietly stopped doing its job. In Los Angeles, that means your air conditioner is working overtime against a hot roof deck that’s radiating straight down into your home. A failed or missing radiant barrier in an LA attic can add 15 to 25 degrees to the attic space, and that heat eventually wins.

Which Knauf Models This Applies To

Knauf makes radiant barrier in two primary formats we see in Los Angeles homes: the single-sided foil (typically Knauf Insulation Radiant Barrier, sometimes called Knauf EcoBatt Radiant Barrier when it’s integrated with a batt) and the double-sided perforated foil for attic floor applications. The single-sided version has one shiny aluminum face and one kraft or poly backing. The double-sided is foil on both faces with micro-perforations to allow moisture vapor to pass, which matters a lot in a coastal Los Angeles climate where attics trap humidity overnight.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: not every “radiant barrier” can go against the attic floor. If you or a previous installer put a non-perforated foil directly on top of the insulation, you can trap moisture in the insulation and grow mold. The Knauf perforated product is specifically designed for floor lay-over; the non-perforated is designed for stapling to rafters. We check which type is up there on every Los Angeles radiant barrier job before recommending anything. If you’re holding a roll and can’t tell which you have, look for the pin-size holes against a light source. If you see no perforations, keep it off the attic floor.

Knauf’s radiant barrier foil typically comes in 26-inch and 48-inch widths, in rolls from 125 to 500 square feet. The double-sided perforated version is the one we install most often in Los Angeles because it works both ways: it reflects summer heat away from the living space and reflects winter heat back down into the home during those December nights when we actually turn on the heat.

Signs Your Knauf Radiant Barrier Installation Is Failing

  • Upstairs rooms run 8 to 12 degrees hotter than downstairs. This is the most common call we get from Los Angeles homeowners. The barrier has torn, settled, or been displaced, and the attic ceiling is radiating heat directly into the second story.
  • Visible tears, sagging, or foil that crumbles when you touch it. In Los Angeles attics, UV exposure through vents, heat cycling, and age cause the aluminum layer to become brittle. If the foil flakes like dead leaves, it’s done.
  • Energy bills spike in summer without a change in your usage. Your AC is compensating for the heat load that the barrier used to block. We see this all over Los Angeles, from Westchester to Eagle Rock, as older barriers hit the end of their useful life.
  • Dust or foil fragments in your attic insulation. This means the barrier has delaminated, and the remaining material is doing almost nothing. It also means the insulation itself may need a look.
  • You find bare spots where installers or previous owners walked. Foil isn’t load-bearing. A foot through it in an LA attic with tight joist spacing is common, and every bare spot is a thermal leak.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles homes, here’s the straightforward math:

  • Attic floor lay-over with perforated foil: $1.50 to $2.25 per square foot installed. This covers the Knauf-style perforated radiant barrier, prep, and full coverage of the attic floor over existing insulation.
  • Rafter/roof deck stapling: $2.00 to $3.25 per square foot installed. More labor, more cutting, more fastening, and it works differently because it creates a reflective airspace against the roof.
  • Combination floor plus key rafter sections: $2.25 to $3.00 per square foot. Some Los Angeles homes benefit from both, especially where air handlers sit in the attic.

What drives the range: attic height, access size, how much old material needs removal, how many obstacles like recessed lights and duct runs we need to cut around, and whether there’s existing insulation we need to level first. Most Los Angeles homes run 1,200 to 2,600 square feet of attic floor, so a full lay-over typically lands between $1,800 and $5,800. That’s a real number, not an estimate pulled from thin air.

Every radiant barrier install from Warmline includes removal of the failed material, prep of the existing insulation, and full installation. The work is backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we make it right. You also get the $50 Off Any Repair Over $250 offer applied automatically on qualifying jobs, and a permanent 5% Senior & Veteran discount if it applies.

DIY or Call Us?

Radiant barrier work isn’t high-tension or electrical, so it’s not dangerous in the way a garage door spring is. But it’s also not a weekend project we’d wish on a Los Angeles homeowner. Attics in Los Angeles hit 130 to 150 degrees in summer, which is genuinely unsafe for an untrained person on a ladder. The work involves crawling across joists, cutting foil around ductwork and electrical, and knowing where not to step. One foot through a drywall ceiling turns a $2,000 project into a much bigger problem.

What you can safely check: look at the barrier from the attic access with a good flashlight. Note the type, condition, and whether it’s on the floor or the rafters. Take photos if you can do so without going past the access point. Then call us with what you found. If there’s any doubt about what you’re seeing, one of our background-checked, uniformed techs will come do a proper attic assessment.
